Juan de Fuca Strait between Washington and Vancouver Island

Some historians and history hobbyists believe that Drake found the Juan de Fuca strait and believed that it was the long-sought after Northwest Passage that would finally allow sea travel between the North Atlantic and the North Pacific.

Gonzales Bay, Victoria, BC

One of the proposed landing locations of Drake and his crew. It is now a very wealthy suburb.

Mountains named for Drake and his contemporaries on Vancouver Island

  1. Mount Sir Francis Drake
  2. Golden Hinde Summit (named after Drake’s ship)
  3. Mount Queen Bess (named after Queen Elizabeth I)
  4. Mount Raleigh (contemporary of Drake also known for his explorations)

All mountains were renamed in the 1930s by R.P Bishop. See his article in British Columbia Historical Quarterly for more information.
